Thanks also to Mt Eden Countdown who thought of us first when they had a massive surplus of eggs, allowing us to save 1,700 eggs from going to landfill.

We would also like to make special mention to the Penrose Countdown e-Store who (despite having to place collections on hold) during the most recent COVID-19 lockdown continued to freeze meat for us – once the restrictions were lifted they had two full pallets worth of meat for us to collect! The total food provided by Countdown equates to approximately 14% of all the food (by weight) KiwiHarvest receives, including 18% of produce and 30% of meat which are two key categories of food that we have historically targeted from supermarkets. This is expected to grow further with newer stores becoming more accustomed to food rescue. Over six months, Countdown’s food donations have grown from 15,170kg to 26,574kg – equating to roughly 75,925 meals worth of food per month.

The quantity of food being rescued through Countdown has also increased significantly due to more stores coming on board and greater awareness of food waste. This has allowed us to to increase the number of overall collections and the number of stores our Auckland branches collects from 17 to 39 (with another two sites expected to join once opened), as well as reach areas we were not previously servicing - both collecting and distributing. In addition to being a Food Donor, Countdown also supports KiwiHarvest in other capacities including recently providing funding for a dedicated account manager, new truck, and driver. It is not always possible to predict demand so any safe, quality surplus food is distributed through their programme to over 12 food rescue organisations around the country. Since then the relationship has grown and we are now a key partner of Countdown’s food rescue programme, helping towards its goal of zero food waste.Ĭountdown are passionate about reducing waste and do so by forecasting (as accurately as possible) consumer demand.
